West Edge Opera is a wonderful destination for bold and innovative opera in California, transforming Oakland into a must visit cultural destination each summer. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Merritt at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center, we create thrilling, performances that explore the boundaries of the art form.
West Edge Opera looks at opera through a fresh lens—presenting early and contemporary works while reimagining tradition to engage and entertain audiences. As arts organizations navigate shifting audience habits, we are committed to sustainability, accessibility, and fostering new connections through opera. Our mission is to make opera relevant and exciting for today’s audiences while ensuring a vibrant future for the art form.
Founded in 1979 as Berkeley Opera by baritone Richard Goodman, the company evolved under General Director Mark Streshinsky and Music Director Jonathan Khuner. In 2014, we became West Edge Opera, embracing an adventurous and forward-thinking artistic vision. Since then, we have presented world, American, and West Coast premieres, commissioned intentional works, and developed innovative adaptations of classic operas.
Now in our 46th season, West Edge Opera has endured and produced both beloved masterpieces and unexpected gems. Our summer festival continues to be a highlight of the Bay Area’s cultural scene, drawing opera lovers and new audiences alike to experience world-class performances in an intimate and welcoming setting.
Looking ahead, along with our supportive board, donor base, community partners and patrons, we are dedicated to sustainable growth—investing in emerging talent, commissioning new works, and exploring creative ways to reach broader audiences. We champion new voices in opera and commit to innovation and creativity that ensures West Edge Opera remains a thriving force in the arts for years to come.
